In June 2017, the Department of Industry, Innovation, and Science released their annual National Survey of Research Commercialisation (NSRC), displaying data from 2013–2015. This results from surveys of publicly-funded Australian institutions, including 38 Universities. The analysis revealed a wealth of activity: over 13,000 research contracts, consultancies and collaborations conducted by Australian Universities in 2015, up from 10,000 in 2013. Universities support 74% of the collaborationactivities identified, and the invested value of the collaborations was A$1.2 billion in 2015.
The NSRC report also detailed outcomes of collaborations. Universities registered nearly 3,000 inventions over 2013-15, and executed over 1,500 licenses, options and agreements with outside parties. The 38 Universities surveyed reported the launch of 29 new companies in 2015, and 55 companies over the period 2013-15. This represents 69% of the start-up activity from the publicly-funded research sector in 2015. In 2015, 34 of the 38 Universities survey were delivering industry skills training.
